Land with a story.
Otamatea brought the wide world of horticulture into Whanganui with a deep sense of respect and love. Mollie & Harry Chittick arrived to the site in the 1940s and established a nursery and garden on this site. Over the years, the Chittick’s acquired a huge knowledge of horticulture, and are remembered by Chittick Place being named in their honour for the services they bought to the Whanganui community.
The Hodson’s arrived in 1955, and for the next 40 years farmed the land with poultry, and grazing cattle and sheep. Crops were never grown, nor chemicals used, allowing this land to stay clean and green.
It's only because of the care and careful stewardship of this land that this new chapter called Tasman Estate is able to be written. We are honoured to continue the legacy, started by the Chittick and Hodson families, that continues caring for the land in an environmentally safe and clean way.
